This report covers US spending only and while the NPD tracks digital sales, it doesn’t track all digital sales for all companies, so take the following numbers with that in mind. Overall, June spending grew 25% over the same month last year to $1.1 billion.
Growth was driven by spending in Hardware and Accessories & Game Cards while spending on actual video games was slightly down. Year-to-date spending across all categories is up 17% compared to the same time period in 2017 to $6 billion. The largest growth category for 2018 so far is Accessories & Game Cards. We’ll kick things off with the best-selling lists and then move on to the numbers. In the following lists an asterisk (*) means that NPD doesn’t track digital sales and this mark ^ means they don’t track PC sales. Best-Selling Games of June (2018) • Mario Tennis Aces* • God of War 2018 • Grand Theft Auto V • The Crew 2 • Far Cry 5 • Mario Kart 8* • LEGO Incredibles • FIFA 18^ • Crash Bandicoot: N.
Sane Trilogy • Detroit: Become Human • Super Mario Odyssey* • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege • NBA 2K18 • Call of Duty: WWII • MLB 18: The Show • Assassin’s Creed: Origins • Vampyr* • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze* • State of Decay 2 Notice here that Grand Theft Auto V—which is quite literally always on the best-selling list month after month—is in the #3 spot for June. That’s incredibly high for a game that’s five years old. Nintendo had a great month with both Mario Tennis Aces (#1) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (#6) performing incredibly well. Ubisoft is also doing incredibly well with Far Cry 5 (#5) and The Crew 2 (#4) still going strong. Notably absent from this and any other list for June is PUBG, the battle royale mega-hit that topped many best-seller lists in 2017. Also absent is Fortnite: Battle Royale, the free-to-play game that’s making over $300 million a month which NPD doesn’t track.
